8 Great Seo Tips For Beginners

1. Create as many back links to your site as possible from relevant sites to your niche, if at all possible using relevant anchor text to your content. The search engines love back links and use it as a key measure in deciding a site’s popularity. Article marketing, blog commenting, social media are three great ways at getting back link love. Ensure that the site you are linking from is ‘do follow’ though.

2. Creating a site map for your site enables the search engine spiders to view and search your site more easily. There are many guides to do this, but Google webmaster tools is great for this, and its worth signing up for.

3. Update your content on a regular basis, so as to drive more relevant traffic to your site. Use a blog to bring new content to your site. This is an invaluble method of showing how up to date your site is, and how the search engines need to know about it. Don’t just leave your site to gather dust.

4. You need to be aware of where you’re placing keywords. Whether it be in your image names, URLs, content, or titles. Look to provide an answer to someone’s question. But beware of overdoing it, as the spiders are used to finding websites that are full of keyword stuffing, and you will be labelled a spammer. A good rule of thumb is to have 2-3% of your content as your keyword, so for every 100 words, mention it 2-3 times.

5. Link within your site and refer to bits of information within your content archives, especially using anchor text within the link. Make sure your link’s are appropriate to the content they are pointing to and the more relevant words pointing to a page, the more it will rank for that phrase.

6. Distribute your content across social media outlets like facebook, twitter, mixx, digg, delicious, reddit etc to ensure that you are getting your message out there to as many people as you can.

7. Put image descriptions on all your images, by starting with the image names and adding an ALT tag which allows you to include a keyword-rich description for each image on your site. Search engines love this, and also try adding captions to all your pictures and being as descriptive as you can with the text which is in immediate proximity to the images.

8. Create search friendly URLs by putting your keyword for the content within them, so that search engines understand what it is within the content. For instance, http://www.coffeepots.com for a site that wants to rank for coffee pots. Try and stick to dot com, dot net or dot org domains.

I hope this has been helpful to you. Even if you are a beginner to SEO or a seasoned pro, getting back to the basics is always an invaluble thing. There are so many more that I could add here. What are your great SEO tips?
